Stump Grinding
Cost Factors
Stump Diameter
The primary cost driver. A 12-inch stump takes 15-20 minutes. A 36-inch stump takes over an hour with a heavy-duty grinder. Bigger stumps mean more material to process.
Root System Extent
Some species — especially Norway maple and silver maple — have extensive surface roots that need grinding beyond the stump itself. Visible root flare adds to the job scope.
Access for Equipment
Our commercial stump grinder needs to reach the stump. If it is in a fenced backyard with a narrow gate, or on a slope, extra setup time adds to the cost.
Number of Stumps
Volume pricing applies. One stump costs the full mobilization fee. Five stumps on the same property cost significantly less per stump because we are already set up.
Grinding Depth
Standard grinding is 6-8 inches below grade. If you are planting a new tree, putting in a patio, or pouring a foundation, deeper grinding (10-12 inches) is available at additional cost.

Cost FAQ
How much does stump grinding cost?
Most stumps cost $150-$300 to grind depending on diameter. Small stumps under 12 inches run $150-$200. Medium stumps (12-24 inches) are $200-$300. Large stumps over 24 inches cost $300-$800+. Multiple stumps get volume pricing. We provide free estimates.
Is it cheaper to grind a stump with tree removal?
Yes — significantly. When we grind the stump during tree removal, it costs $100-$200 because our equipment is already on-site and mobilized. Standalone stump grinding starts at $150 because of the separate trip and setup.
How deep do you grind stumps?
Standard grinding is 6-8 inches below grade, which is deep enough for lawn, sod, or garden beds. For new tree planting, patios, or construction, we grind 10-12 inches below grade. Just tell us your plans for the area and we will grind to the right depth.
What happens to the wood chips after grinding?
Grinding produces a mix of wood chips and soil. We can leave them for you to use as mulch — most homeowners fill the hole and use the excess in garden beds. Or we haul everything away and backfill with topsoil for an additional charge.
Can you grind stumps near foundations or fences?
Yes. Our equipment can work right up against foundations, walkways, fences, and retaining walls without damaging them. We have ground stumps in every tight spot imaginable — between buildings, next to pools, against stone walls.
