Tree Service in Lexington, MA

Town: Lexington, MAService: Tree RemovalWhen: early summer

A Lexington, MA homeowner called for a removal quote on a mature sugar maple they assumed was dying. We walked the trunk, found sound wood, and recommended structural pruning instead of removal. The tree stayed. The bill was a fraction of a takedown. Sometimes the right job is the smaller one.

The call was for a removal. The tree had other plans.

The homeowner had a big sugar maple near the house and a bad feeling about it. Some dead branches up top, a few limbs over the roof, and a neighbor who had just paid to take one down. They wanted a number to remove it.

I walked the trunk before I quoted anything. Sound wood, no conks at the base, no crack in the main stem. The dead was confined to a handful of branches in an otherwise healthy crown. This tree was not dying. It needed a haircut, not a funeral.

What we actually did

We pruned out the deadwood, took two limbs back off the roofline, and did some light structural work to balance the crown. ISA-standard cuts — when good pruning is done right, the tree looks like it grew that way. Half a day, and the maple is good for another couple of decades.

Dead branches inside a healthy canopy are normal. A few of them get pruned. It is when more than a third of the crown is dead that removal joins the conversation. This one was nowhere close.

We will talk you out of work you do not need

This is the part the national outfit will not do. There is more money in a removal than a pruning, so guess what they quote. We have been here since 1995 and we plan to be here in 2056, which means telling you the truth is better business than selling you a takedown you will regret.

If your tree is genuinely a hazard, we will say so plainly and bring it down safely. If it just needs pruning, we will say that too — and you keep your tree and most of your money. Either way you get a straight answer.
