Three pines, one of them too close to the house for comfort
The homeowner called about three white pines in the back corner of the yard. Two of them had grown out over the roofline the way pines do when nobody pruned them for twenty years. The third was fine where it stood, but it was in the drop zone for the other two.
White pines get tall and top-heavy fast around here. By the time the canopy is over your shingles, the safe move is usually to lift the wood out, not fell it. So we brought the crane.
How we got them down without touching the roof
A climber set a rigging point near the top of each pine. The crane took the weight, the climber made the cut, and the crane swung each section out over the driveway where the ground crew ran it through the chipper. Nothing free-fell near the house. That is the whole point of crane work — you are picking the wood up, not gambling on where it lands.
We tracked the crane in on plywood so the lawn took the weight instead of the tires. By the end of the day the only sign we had been there was three fewer trees and a stump line we marked for grinding.
When you actually need a crane (and when you do not)
