Are Free Tree Removal Estimates Actually Free?

By Keith McDonaldPublished:

Yes. A tree removal estimate should cost you nothing, and ours never does. You call, we come out, we walk the tree, and you get a flat price in writing. No deposit, no obligation, no pressure. If a tree company asks for money before they will even give you a number, that tells you everything you need to know about how the rest of the job will go.

This guide explains what a real free estimate actually includes, what can move the price, and the red flags that separate an honest quote from a sales trap.

What a free estimate actually includes

When we quote a tree, we are not eyeballing it from the truck. A proper estimate looks at the things that decide the price:

  • Size and species. A 30-foot birch and an 80-foot oak are different jobs and different prices.
  • Access. Can we get a truck and a chipper near the tree, or are we carrying everything through a gate by hand?
  • The drop zone. Open yard is cheap. A tree leaning over your roof, a fence, or power lines needs rigging or a crane, and that changes the number.
  • Cleanup. Whether you want the wood hauled, chipped, or left for firewood.
  • The stump. Removal and stump grinding are two different services. We will price both so you can decide.

For a full breakdown of how those factors turn into dollars, read our tree removal cost guide for Massachusetts. For typical ranges by job, see our pricing page.

Why we do estimates for free

Because that is how you earn the work. We have been doing tree work in Middlesex County since 1995, and a free, honest quote is the cheapest advertising there is. If our price is fair and our reputation holds up, you call us. If you find someone cheaper and trustworthy, good for you. We are not going to charge you for the privilege of finding out.

A rough ballpark before we even arrive

Every tree is different, but here is the kind of range a free estimate usually lands in around here:

JobTypical range
Small tree removal (under 30 ft)$300 to $500
Medium tree removal (30 to 60 ft)$500 to $1,500
Large tree removal (60 ft plus)$1,000 to $3,000
Crane-assisted removal$2,000 to $5,000
Stump grinding$150 to $300

The estimate is where we replace that range with one real number for your tree.

Red flags in a tree removal quote

Here is where we tell you when not to trust an estimate, even ours:

  • A deposit to get a quote. No. A quote is free. A deposit is for booking confirmed work, and even then we do not ask for one on standard removals.
  • A price scribbled on a business card. Get it in writing, with the scope spelled out. Vague quotes grow.
  • Door-knockers after a storm. The crew that shows up uninvited the morning after a nor’easter is rarely the crew you want on a ladder near your house. Ask for a license and proof of insurance.
  • No insurance. If an uninsured cutter gets hurt in your yard, that can become your problem. We are fully insured and will hand you the certificate.

How our free estimate works

Call us at (978) 375-2272 or use the free estimate form. We set a time, come look at the tree, and either hand you a written price on the spot or email it the same day. The number we write is the number you pay. We do not bury fees, and we do not subcontract the work to whoever is cheapest that week. The crew that quotes your tree is the crew that takes it down.

Give us a call

Standing under a tree wondering what it will cost is no way to spend a weekend. Call (978) 375-2272 and we will tell you, for free, exactly what it takes to deal with it. If it turns out the tree just needs pruning instead of removal, we will tell you that too, and that conversation is also free.
